Why Pray the Novena to
OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE?

2031 will mark the 500th anniversary of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s apparition to St. Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac, near present-day Mexico City. Recognizing the profound significance of this event, Pope Francis, before his passing, invited the peoples of the Americas to begin preparing spiritually for this celebration.

In response to the Holy Father’s call, Archbishop Richard Henning is inviting all Catholics across the Archdiocese of Boston to join him in this time of preparation with renewed faith and commitment.

NOVENA PILGRIMAGE

To foster devotion, deepen reverence, and honor Our Lady of Guadalupe, Archbishop Henning is launching an Archdiocesan Novena from December 4 to December 12, 2025. Over nine evenings, the Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe will be hosted in a different parish each night. Through prayer, music, and fellowship, families and communities will come together to grow in faith and celebrate the loving presence of our Blessed Mother.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Nine-Day Novena

WHAT IS A NOVENA?

A novena is a traditional Catholic devotion consisting of nine consecutive days of prayer, usually offered for a particular intention or in honor of a specific devotion. Each novena generally includes designated prayers and intentions, and may also be accompanied by practices such as fasting or attending Mass.

HISTORY OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe began in 1531, when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill near present-day Mexico City. Through a series of five apparitions, she revealed herself as the Mother of God and asked that a chapel be built so she could show God’s love and compassion to all people. As a sign of her presence, her image miraculously appeared on Juan Diego’s tilma, leading to the conversion of millions and the rapid growth of faith throughout the Americas. Over the centuries, devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe has spread across the world, and the Church has honored her as the Patroness of the Americas and Star of the New Evangelization. Her message of mercy, hope, and maternal care continues to draw people to Christ and His Church.

THE TILMA OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

A tilma is a cloak made from maguey cactus fibers, worn by men in early Colonial Mexico. How it was worn reflected one’s social class. When Juan Diego gathered the Castilian roses, he placed them in his tilma. Upon opening his tilma for the bishop, the roses fell, revealing the miraculous mage of Mary imprinted on the cloak. This image, reflecting the features of indigenous Mexicans, is venerated today as the Sacred Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Today, the sacred image is housed in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, a major pilgrimage site visited by millions annually, especially on December 12, her Feast Day.

THREE FUN FACTS ABOUT THE TILMA

  • The tilma, made of local cactus fiber that normally lasts 15–20 years, has preserved the miraculous image intact for nearly 500 years without any signs of deterioration.
  • Mary wore a black maternity band, signifying she was with child. This was a sign to the Indians that someone is yet to come.
  • Her appearance resembles a description in scripture. Revelation 12:1 reads, “a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet” describing the exact placement of Our Lady of Guadalupe standing in front of radiant light, like the sun, and over a crescent moon.
